With graduation practice not starting until later in the morning, Peter slept in. He needed it, too. He had been exhausted ever since the incident on Saturday. He was trying really hard to continue with normal, everyday life after such a strange experience, and thought that he may have convinced himself that things were going to go back to normal. He showered, got dressed and called Laura, who agreed to give him a ride to the school for graduation rehearsal. She was at his house within fifteen minutes, and they drove to school together. Practice went well. They only had to walk through the whole process once, but practiced little bits and pieces several times, such as standing up as a group, sitting down as a group, and going from the entrance line to their places in the stands. Peter wanted to talk with Laura more, but there were quite a few people with last names between “Sinclair” and “Valgard.”
Towards the end of rehearsal, Peter got a phone call on his cell phone. The number on caller ID was his home number, but since the class was right in the middle of their final walk-through, he ignored it. After rehearsal was over, he was calling the house to see what they wanted as Laura walked up to him. He saw her coming and held up a finger to say that he would be on the phone for a minute. Sarah answered the phone at home.
“Hi, did you call me?” he asked.
“Mom did. Dan’s in the hospital,” said Sarah. “He was attacked by some guy and beat up pretty bad.”
“Which hospital is he at?”
“They took him to Swedish. That’s all the information I have.”
“Is he going to be alright?”
“I don’t know. Mom hasn’t called back yet. I think you should go see him.”
“I will,” said Peter, looking at Laura who looked worried. “At least, I think I will. I’ll talk to you later.”
“What’s up?” asked Laura.
“Dan’s in the hospital. Can you drive me there?”
“Which hospital?”
“Swedish. It’s not far from home.”
“Yeah, I know where it is. What happened?” she asked as they started to walk towards Laura’s car.
