Post 5

This is all I was able to get done today, mostly due to homework, work, laundry, dinner with friends and other distractions:

Monday evening, Peter wanted very much for Laura to call him, but he never heard from her. It was after 9:00 by the time he realized why the phone never rang. Sarah had been on the phone with her husband for hours, talking about why he did what he did and how that affects their lives going forward. Being pregnant on top of having been cheated on made her extremely emotional. She must have gone through half of the box of tissues that night. Peter felt for her, but was still disappointed when he didn’t get a chance to talk with Laura.

The next day, they saw each other before school, and Peter explained what happened. “I see,” said Laura when he had finished. “Well, I’d better get to class. I’m on the other side of the building from here.”

“Will I see you at lunch?” asked Peter.

“Yeah,” answered Laura. “I’ll meet you in the cafeteria.”

Peter went to class, but was distracted all day by thoughts of Laura. Lunch couldn’t arrive fast enough. When the bell rang, he already had his books gathered up and raced out the door to meet up with her. When he saw her standing by the entrance to the lunchroom, he smiled brightly and walked directly to her. They talked the entire time they stood in line together, and carried the conversation to the table. They had barely eaten when the half-period bell sounded. They only had another ten minutes to spend with each other, and most of that was spent finishing up their lunches. They said their good-byes and headed to their respective classes. After school, they met up by the parking lot and Laura gave Peter a ride home.

That was the way they spent their days for the rest of the week. Peter found out that Laura would be going to college in the fall, but that it wasn’t far from where he was going to go. He also told Laura about getting to pick up his brother at the airport, and all the drama around Sarah’s return home. They got to know each other’s parents by what they told each other, and catch up on a lifetime of living in the same town without really getting to know each other.

The following week, their schedule was thrown off because of final exams, but at least they would have the Friday before graduation off. By Wednesday, they had decided to start officially dating, at least until it was time for college. They could have a good summer together at the very least. They held hands as they walked across the parking lot, and while they were driving to Peter’s house. They decide that their first date will be to go have pizza at Beau Jo’s and see a movie afterwards. As Laura dropped him off, they shared their first kiss leaning against her car.

School let out just right at lunch on Thursday since final exams were done. Peter and Laura spent a couple hours of the afternoon together before Laura dropped him off at his house. She was going to pick him up at 5:30. Peter dashed into the house and told his sister about his date. He could tell she was really having a rough time right now. She was still in her pajamas and had bags under her eyes. Peter gave her a hug and once again had an almost overwhelming urge to stay and protect her. But he couldn’t let Laura down, so he went upstairs, showered and dressed for the evening.

He came back downstairs at 5:15, anxiously pacing around the house. At 5:20, Laura arrived and he hopped down the front step and got in her car. They drove to the pizza place and split a small Plantation pie with some sodas while they held hands and talked more. Peter’s watch alarm went off to remind him that it was time to go to the theater. It’s a good thing, because they had completely lost track of time. They were definitely starting to fall for each other.

At the theater, they split popcorn and a drink and sat about twelve rows away from the screen. They only really half watched the movie, and spent the rest of the time stealing glances at each other, holding hands and occasionally leaning in and kissing. They carried on like that until they got back to Peter’s house and shared a few long, intense kisses before Peter got out of the car. Laura pushed the button to roll down the electric window on the passenger side, and reached out to Peter, handing him a cell phone.

“Here. I got you this,” she said as he took it from her. “This way we can talk even if your sister is on the phone.”

He thanked her for the gift and went inside. They didn’t wait long to use it. Sarah was on the phone again, so Peter called Laura from the cell phone. They only talked briefly, not wanting to use up any minutes off the phone. Laura had to spend Friday with her mother to get ready for graduation, and Peter was going to pick up his brother at the airport on Saturday. His father already told him he couldn’t bring her along while he was borrowing the Mercedes, so they wouldn’t see each other again until Saturday afternoon.
